Turkmenistan is preparing for its second Joint External Evaluation (JEE) and will host an orientation workshop combined with a training on the International Health Regulations (IHR) (2005) in Ashgabat from 20 to 23 October 2026.
The JEE is a voluntary, collaborative and multisectoral process through which countries assess their capacity to prevent, detect and respond rapidly to public health risks. The process brings together experts from relevant sectors, including human and animal health, food safety, emergency management, border health and other areas contributing to health security.
The workshop will support all participants in preparing for the JEE and kick off the self-evaluation process, and update and orient all relevant stakeholders on the 2024 amendments to the IHR (2005) across all core capacity areas.
The orientation workshop will introduce the JEE methodology, scope and process, and help participating institutions understand their roles and responsibilities. It will also provide an opportunity to review the self-assessment process, identify the information and evidence required, and establish arrangements for effective multisectoral collaboration.
The workshop is being organized by the WHO Country Office in Turkmenistan with support from WHO/Europe and national authorities in the country. It is funded by the Pandemic Fund project “Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response through a One Health Approach” in Central Asia. The workshop will contribute to strengthening national capacities under the IHR (2005) and to supporting a coordinated, evidence-informed assessment of the country’s health-security capacities.
